Why did my trash/recycle not get picked up?
Is it still Monday?
If yes, please be patient as the driver may have fallen behind and is still out collecting. Also, verify that both neighbors on your side of the street have been collected, as trash and recycling drivers will regularly collect trash/recycling on one side of the street, then come back for the other side of the street.
Is it after Monday?
If yes, please verify the following:
-
Was Monday a holiday?
-
Did you set your trash and recycling out to the curb prior to 7:00am on Monday?
-
Is the trash/recycling properly contained within the appropriate curb carts?
-
Was the trash item that was not picked-up a "bulk" or large item that does not fit in the curb cart?
-
One "bulk" or large item such as an appliance or piece of furniture will be picked up on the first Monday of each month. Additional bulk items will be collected on the third Monday of each May and October (May 2020 bulk item collection has been postponed to Monday, July 6th due to COVID-19). For "bulk" item collection outside of these dates, please contact Waste Management at: 866-797-9018.
None of the above apply to me.
When is residential curbside trash, recycling, and compost collected?

What do I do with my yard waste?
From April through December, Waste Management will pick up yard waste that is placed in approved paper compost bags or in trash cans marked with an approved sticker, available at the City Office. The bags are available at your local hardware store. Compost is picked up on the same schedule as your garbage collection.
Why is yard waste and compost only picked up during certain times of the year?
Yard waste in the City of Dexter is collected from April through December. Michigan State law prohibits yard waste from being disposed of in a landfill, and the composting site where Waste Management takes yard waste is not open during the winter months.
What should I do with branches and tree limbs?
The Department of Public Works provides for the collection of brush, branches and leaves. The following guidelines must be followed before your yard waste will be collected:
All limbs, branches and brush must be stacked neatly at the curb with but-ends facing the same direction. Piles are limited to 10 feet in length. Individual limbs may not exceed 4 inches in diameter at base, 2 inches at leafy end. Limbs smaller than 1 inch must be bagged.
Limbs, branches and brush from complete tree maintenance by a homeowner are the responsibility of the homeowner or their contracted professional.
What should I do with leaves?
The Department of Public Works vacuums leaves in the fall. Leaf piles should be neatly raked to the side of the road (not in the road) between the road and the sidewalk. Please make sure that there are no foreign materials (branches, sticks, pumpkins) in the leaf piles.
What should I do with plastic bags?
Plastic bags do not belong in either the trash or the recycling stream. So, the City of Dexter has partnered with Recycle Ann Arbor to provide for a plastic bag drop-off station at the City Offices, 8123 Main St., 2nd Floor, Dexter, MI 48130. Any plastic bags dropped-off will be taken to an appropriate recycling center for processing.
THIS SERVICE HAS BEEN TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED.
One of my carts is missing, what should I do?

One of my carts was damaged, what should I do?
Please call 734-426-8303 to have your cart swapped.
I am physically unable to take the cart to the curb, what should I do?
Residents may be eligible to receive handicap / door-to-curb service. This service is designed to assist those residents who, due to short-term injury or long-term disability, cannot move their trash or recycling curb carts to the curb on collection day. Residents must submit a request to Waste Management by calling 866-797-9018.
How will I be billed, and can I put my service on hold when I am out of town?
The cost for refuse services will be collected as a fee on your bi-monthly utility bill, and includes trash, recycling, yard waste, bulk item, curbside leaf, and holiday tree collection as well as seasonal brush chipping. There is no provision in the Waste Management contract for residents to put a hold on, or opt out of service at this time.
Will my home be serviced at the same time every week?
While Waste Management strives to maintain a consistent pick-up schedule, there are times where service will occur earlier or later due to weather, issues with trucks, substitute drivers, etc. The City of Dexter and Waste Management cannot guarantee that your home will be collected at the same time every day. Please set your trash, recycling, and yard waste to the curb no later than 7:00am each Monday.
